Canon 40D Shutter Count

Canon 40D Shutter Count

Can you check it, which software build to use, and what counts as a healthy number.

Likely yes — with one caveat.
The 40D uses the DIGIC III processor. The developer explicitly lists the DIGIC III-based 1000D as working with the SDK 2.14 subversion, so the 40D (same processor generation) is expected to work too — but it has not been individually confirmed. Try the SDK 2.14 build; if your result differs, tell us.

How to check the shutter count on a Canon 40D

  1. Download the right build. Get the SDK 2.14 (“Legacy”) subversion of EOS Digital Info v1.4 from our download page — shutter-count reading is only supported in this build.
  2. Connect via USB. Turn the camera off, connect it to your PC with a USB cable, then turn it on. Close Canon EOS Utility if it is running, and disable Wi-Fi/NFC in the camera menu if your model has it.
  3. Read the count. Run the tool as Administrator and click Connect. The shutter actuation count appears next to the camera model, along with the serial number and firmware version.

What is a good shutter count for the Canon 40D?

Canon rates the 40D’s shutter for 100,000 actuations. As a rule of thumb:

  • Under 50,000 — low. Plenty of life left; a good buy if the price is right.
  • 50,000–100,000 — normal for a used body. Budget for a possible shutter replacement down the line.
  • Over 100,000 — high. The shutter has exceeded its rated life; it may keep working for years, but factor a replacement (typically $200–$400 at a service centre) into the price.

Remember: the count is only part of the story. A 2007 camera with 20,000 actuations can still have a tired mirror mechanism or worn grips — always inspect the body in person or buy from a seller with a return policy.

Canon 40D shutter count — FAQ

Does the shutter count show in the photo EXIF?
No. Canon does not write the actuation count into EXIF data (unlike Nikon and Pentax). You need a USB-connected tool like EOS Digital Info.
Will checking the shutter count harm my camera?
No — reading the count is a read-only operation over USB.
Which version of EOS Digital Info do I need?
The SDK 2.14 (“Legacy”) build — only it can read shutter actuations. The SDK 3.5 build cannot.
