Canon Shutter Life Expectancy

What counts as low, normal, or high?
- Low: under 50% of the rating — plenty of life left.
- Normal: 50–100% of the rating — typical for a used body; budget for a future replacement.
- High: over the rating — the shutter is on borrowed time. Replacement typically costs $200–$400 at a service centre.
Ratings are conservative. Canon’s numbers are minimum test-cycle figures — many shutters sail past them. But when buying, price should reflect remaining rated life, not hope.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when the shutter fails?
It typically starts producing partially black frames or jams entirely. It’s a mechanical part — a service centre replaces the whole shutter unit, usually $200–$400 including labour.

Does video recording wear the shutter?
Barely — video uses the electronic shutter/sensor readout, not the mechanical shutter. Heavy video use shows as a low photo count with a well-worn everything else.

Do mirrorless cameras have shutter ratings?
Yes for the mechanical shutter (e.g. EOS R5: 500,000), but electronic-shutter shooting doesn’t consume it — which is why mirrorless counts are harder to interpret.
