Canon 80D Shutter Count

Canon 80D Shutter Count

Can you check it, which software build to use, and what counts as a healthy number.

✗ No — the shutter count cannot be read on the Canon 80D.
The 80D uses a DIGIC 6 processor, and Canon restricted shutter-count access on this generation to its own service centres. EOS Digital Info (either subversion) cannot retrieve actuations. See what you can do instead below.

How to check the shutter count on a Canon 80D

Honestly? You can’t — not with this tool, and not with any third-party software we know of. Here’s what is actually possible:

  • Canon service centre: the only party that can read the actuation count on DIGIC 6 bodies. If you need an exact number (e.g. for a warranty claim), this is the route.
  • What EOS Digital Info can still do on the 80D via the SDK 3.5 subversion: read the serial number and firmware version, edit owner/artist/copyright strings, and sync the camera clock.
  • EXIF file numbering (e.g. IMG_9842) is not the shutter count — it resets and can be misleading. Don’t rely on it when buying used.

Buying a used 80D? Do this instead

Without a readable shutter count, judge the body by condition: listen to the shutter (it should sound crisp, not sluggish), check the mirror box for wear, inspect the sensor for scratches, and ask the seller for sample images at all ISOs. Buy from a retailer with a return policy — KEH and MPB both grade used bodies and offer warranties, which matters more than ever when the count is unknowable.

What is a good shutter count for the Canon 80D?

Canon rates the 80D’s shutter for 100,000 actuations. As a rule of thumb:

  • Under 50,000 — low. Plenty of life left; a good buy if the price is right.
  • 50,000–100,000 — normal for a used body. Budget for a possible shutter replacement down the line.
  • Over 100,000 — high. The shutter has exceeded its rated life; it may keep working for years, but factor a replacement (typically $200–$400 at a service centre) into the price.

Remember: the count is only part of the story. A 2016 camera with 20,000 actuations can still have a tired mirror mechanism or worn grips — always inspect the body in person or buy from a seller with a return policy.

Canon 80D shutter count — FAQ

Does the shutter count show in the photo EXIF?
No. Canon does not write the actuation count into EXIF data (unlike Nikon and Pentax). You need a USB-connected tool like EOS Digital Info.
Will checking the shutter count harm my camera?
No — reading the count is a read-only operation over USB.
Which version of EOS Digital Info do I need?
Neither build can read the shutter count on the 80D (DIGIC 6). The SDK 3.5 build can still read metadata and sync settings.
