EOS Digital Info vs Canon EOS Utility
Canon’s official software is free — so why can’t it show the shutter count? And why do you need a third-party tool at all?
Canon EOS Utility is Canon’s official, free tethering and camera-control software. It handles remote shooting, image transfer and firmware updates — but it deliberately does not display the shutter actuation count. Canon never exposed that number in any consumer software, which is exactly the gap EOS Digital Info fills (reading it via an undocumented SDK function).
| EOS Digital Info | Canon EOS Utility | |
|---|---|---|
| Price / source | Free, independent developer | Free, official Canon |
| Shutter count | Yes (SDK 2.14 build) | No |
| Tethered shooting | No | Yes |
| Firmware updates | No | Yes |
| Owner/copyright editing | Yes | Partial |
Important: never run both at the same time. EOS Utility locks the USB session, so EOS Digital Info will report “camera not connected” until you fully quit EOS Utility (check the system tray). Use one, close it, then use the other.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t Canon show the shutter count themselves?
Canon treats it as service data. No official consumer tool displays it — third-party tools read it through undocumented SDK functions.

Can EOS Utility damage anything EOS Digital Info does?
No, they don’t interfere beyond the USB-session conflict. Reading the shutter count is read-only either way.
