Canon EOS R8 Shutter Count

How to check it — including the free method that works on this model.

✔ Yes — free, from a photo. No software needed.
Unlike older DSLRs, the EOS R8 writes its shutter data into photo EXIF. Take an unedited photo, upload it to a free reader (shuttercount.net, camerashuttercount.net or shuttercount.app (runs in your browser, no upload)), and you get the count in seconds.

How to check the shutter count on a Canon EOS R8 (free)

  1. Take a fresh photo with the EOS R8 — JPEG or RAW, straight from the camera. Do not edit it: editing strips the data the reader needs.
  2. Upload it to a free EXIF reader: shuttercount.net, camerashuttercount.net or shuttercount.app (runs in your browser, no upload).
  3. Read the number. You’ll see the camera’s cumulative total — note it includes electronic-shutter shots, not just mechanical ones.
Understand the number: on mirrorless bodies the EXIF figure is the cumulative total (mechanical + electronic shutter). The mechanical-only count lives inside the camera and needs a USB app or Canon service. For wear assessment, the mechanical count matters more — but the total still tells you how heavily the camera was used.

Can EOS Digital Info read the EOS R8?

No — the EOS R8 is too new for it (Canon locked shutter-count access on DIGIC X bodies). The SDK 3.5 build can still read the serial number, firmware and metadata over USB, but not actuations. For a free count, the photo method above is the way.
